  • South African senior men's national team coach Hugo Broos has said the quiet part aloud
  • Broos said that Sierre Leone and Botswana were selected as opponents in the FIFA break because of their lower ranking
  • The Belgian believed that playing the two nations could help boost his team's confidence after a rocky 2022

Bafana Bafana will take on Sierre Leone this afternoon and Botswana on Tuesday evening.

Coach Hugo Broos said that the 'weakness' of these two opponents was by design in terms of chosen teams, considering the poor 2022 the national team has had. South Africa has won one match all year.

According to the Daily Sun, the Belgian said:

"We were looking this time for opponents that were a little bit less than the opponents before, like Ghana, France and Morocco to gain a little confidence for ourselves.

"It is three defeats [this year]. It is a moment now to try to have a victory. That does not mean the game on Saturday will be easy."

Broos confirmed that he will use the two fixtures to give everyone in the squad a fair run as an opportunity to get a closer look in the attempt to qualify for next year's Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast.

Bafana Bafana coach says that criticism after France, Morocco and Ghana losses was unfair

Bafana Bafana's coach Hugo Broos continues to shoot from the hip.

The 70-year-old Belgian, who won the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon in 2017, said that criticism of him and the national side following a run of defeats this year was unfair. The team lost 5-0 to France in a friendly, 2-1 to Morocco in an AFCON qualifier and Ghana 1-0 in a FIFA World Cup qualifier.

According to The Citizen, Broos said:

“I have to admit that we had a period behind us that was disappointing. We had three defeats. The only thing was that I felt the reaction to those three defeats was unfair.
"And from that moment my critics started. There were already some people asking for my resignation."
