Broos set the cat amongst the pigeons when he said that the country lacked quality players to compete globally and that the standard of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) wasn’t at a high level.

His comments didn’t sit well with many people, including Steve Komphela and Kermit Erasmus, but he did receive support from others. Former Orlando Pirates assistant coach, Zipho Dlangalala, agreed with Broos’ comments and said that the country needed to be honest about certain things and find solutions, The Citizen reported.

Broos apologised for the comments on Saturday when he addressed the South African Football Association during a special conference, SABC Sport reported.

“I want to apologize if my declaration in the press conference last Tuesday was disrespectful against this nation. This was not my intention, certainly not. I came here one year ago and the only thing I want is for SA football to become better. I think we are on the right way, but there is still a lot of work to do.”

Broos added that it was a pity that South Africa was not among the best teams in Africa but that it was something that could be achieved in the next few years.

He also called on everyone in the country to play their part and promised to do everything in his power to ensure Bafana qualified for next year’s AFCON tournament and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
