How Valencia crumbled and Griezmann shines

Valencia were looking for the second win of the season and started brightly against Atletico Madrid with the home side dominating the early exchanges.

Former Arsenal midfielder Yunus Musah thought he had given Valencia the lead when he thundered the ball past Yan Oblak from a distance only for the goal to be chalked off by VAR following a foul on Joao Felix in the build.

Coaches Diego Simeone and Gennaro Gattuso were booked as tempers flared on the touchline, before Joao Felix was denied by Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

VAR interfered again when Thierry Correia was sent off for a professional foul on Morata, but the center referee changed his decision and instead dished out a yellow card to the defender.

Up until Lemar and Griezmann came off the bench to make an immediate impact on their team, neither side appeared very dangerous in the second half.

Diego Simeone had brought on Griezmann and Thomas Lemar on 64 minutes and in 120 seconds they had combined to win the game for Atletico Madrid.

Lemar dispossessed Hugo Guillamon and fed Griezmann whose effort From the edge of the area clipped the hand of Carlos Soler and deflected past the wrong-footed Giorgi Mamardashvili to give Atletico the lead.

Mamardashvili produced an excellent save to thwart Yannick Carrasco after Matheus Cunha had a goal ruled out for offside and Valencia's impressive keeper prevented Griezmann from claiming a double.

The win takes Atletico Madrid to 6th on the La Liga table with 6 points from their opening 3 games while Valencia dropped to 14th with just 3 points garnered so far.
