Arsenal sit at the summit of the Premier League following a hard-fought 1-0 win over Newcastle, with Mikel Arteta using the result as a platform to articulate what he believes is the defining characteristic of his squad this season.
When asked to describe what he sees when he looks at his players, the Arsenal head coach kept his answer brief and direct. “Hunger. Hunger to win. That’s it,” Arteta said, as cited by Fabrizio Romano on X.
The victory over Newcastle extended Arsenal’s advantage at the top of the table to three points, though Manchester City retain a game in hand, ensuring the title race remains tightly contested heading into the final weeks of the campaign.
Arteta expanded on his message by linking the squad’s motivation to objectives established before a ball was kicked this season. “To compete, to prepare and to achieve the goal that we set at the start of the season,” he added.
Despite the positive result, the Arsenal manager was measured in his assessment of the performance, acknowledging areas where his side fell short. “It is so hard to win this league. The message at half-time was clear, we needed to score a second. We tried but when you are not that efficient in certain areas, you have to have other things to win a game,” Arteta said.
He credited the team’s defensive structure and collective resilience for securing the three points in the absence of clinical finishing. “We certainly had discipline, courage and great habits defensively, but with the ball, there are habits we have to do much better,” the Spaniard noted.
The comments reflect the fine margins that continue to define Arsenal’s title challenge. The Gunners have experienced near-misses in recent seasons, finishing second in the Premier League in both the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns, making the current push for a first English top-flight title since 2003-04 particularly significant for the club and its supporters.
Complications off the pitch also loom for Arsenal, with midfielder Declan Rice reportedly facing a UEFA ban ahead of the club’s Europa League second-leg tie against Atletico Madrid, a development that could affect Arteta’s options in the coming fixtures.
With matches running out and Manchester City’s game in hand keeping the pressure firmly on Arsenal, Arteta’s squad will need to maintain both the defensive solidity and the mentality their manager has publicly championed if they are to convert their current position into a title.
