Premier League title holders Arsenal have encountered their first significant transfer setback of the summer window after Bournemouth rejected an approach for midfielder Alex Scott, according to Goal.

The North London club, who ended a 22-year league title drought this past season by winning the 2025/26 Premier League crown — a wait stretching back to Arsène Wenger’s celebrated ‘Invincibles’ side of 2003/04 — are now looking to strengthen their squad for a title defence. Midfield depth was identified as a priority area, with Scott emerging as a key target.

Sources suggest Arsenal’s contact with the Cherries was characterised as a preliminary inquiry aimed at establishing Scott’s potential valuation and availability, rather than a formal bid. Despite the exploratory nature of the approach, Bournemouth’s hierarchy responded immediately and without ambiguity, stating that the 22-year-old is not available for transfer this summer.

Scott’s performances throughout the 2025/26 Premier League campaign go some way to explaining Bournemouth’s firm stance. The midfielder, who joined the south coast club from Bristol City, logged 2,860 league minutes during the recently concluded season, contributing three goals and one assist while drawing widespread recognition as one of the division’s most effective progressive ball-carriers under manager Andoni Iraola.

Bournemouth have developed a reputation in recent seasons for retaining key assets despite interest from larger clubs, and their swift rejection of Arsenal’s approach signals their continued ambition to remain competitive in the top flight without dismantling the core of their squad.

For Arsenal, the setback leaves their midfield recruitment plans in a state of flux. The Gunners are reportedly evaluating alternative targets, with Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimarães among the names under consideration, according to reports. Guimarães has been one of the standout midfielders in the Premier League over the past two seasons and would represent a considerably more complex and expensive pursuit given Newcastle’s own European ambitions.

The failure to advance talks for Scott underscores a recurring challenge for Arsenal in the transfer market: competition for established Premier League talent is fierce, and clubs outside the traditional top four have become increasingly resistant to selling key players mid-cycle, particularly when those players are under long-term contracts.

The summer window remains in its early stages, and Arsenal’s recruitment team is expected to continue assessing options across multiple positions as Mikel Arteta’s side prepares to compete on both domestic and European fronts next season.
