According to Metro UK, Odegaard had a great opportunity to open the scoring in the early exchanges of the match after he collected a pull-back before firing off a left-footed shot.

While his effort was blocked before it could hit the target, the Arsenal skipper was wiped out afterwards by Rodri with a late tackle.

Footage from the incident showed Odegaard immediately rolling around in agony, clutching his ankle before getting up to his knees and appealing to the referee to give a penalty.

The referee, who was not referred to the monitor by VAR, opted against awarding a spot-kick as Spain went on to take a lead moments later via Dani Olmo.

Arsenal fans fume at Rodri

Rodri's awkward challenge on Odegaard did not go down well with Arsenal fans, who quickly hit out at the Man City star for 'attempting to kill' the Norwegian midfielder.

One wrote:

"Absolutely horrible foul from Rodri on Odegaard. Incredibly, no penalty given! Rodri under Pep’s orders to injure our captain?"

A second noted:

"Odegaard denied a clear penalty. Rodri trying to end Arsenal’s title run with a nasty red card challenge. Fuming."

Another posted:

"Rodri’s on a mission to hospitalise that Kevin De Bruyne wannabe."

A fourth raged:

"Was Rodri trying to end Odegaard’s season with that tackle?"

Odegaard vs De Bruyne

Earlier, Sports Brief reported how former Liverpool star Jamie Redknapp courted controversy on social media after claiming one Arsenal star was better than Kevin de Bruyne this season.

Redknapp was on punditry duty on March 12 for the London derby involving Arsenal and Fulham, which the Gunners comfortably won to maintain a five-point lead at the top of the table.

After the game, the former Reds star was full of praise for Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard, who he claimed is possibly the best midfielder in the Premier League.
