Granit Xhaka’s Booking Against Leeds United Under Probe As Details Emerge on Suspicious Betting Activity

The circumstances surrounding the issuance of a yellow card against Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka is under investigation.

Xhaka was yellow carded in a Premier League game against Leeds United in the 86th minute at Elland Road on December 18th.

The Football Association(FA) had been alerted of suspicious betting activity around the incident and has been investigating the matter for six months. The FA has now handed the case over to National Crime Agency to dig deeper.

The Daily Mail reports that neither Xhaka himself, nor Arsenal, are under investigation. Concerns had been raised after an unusually high amount of money was placed on Xhaka getting a yellow card in the last 10 minutes of the game.

A bet of 52,000 euros was placed and it received a huge payout of about 250,000 euros. The issue was raised to the FA with the amount wagered being unusually high for an amount one would place on a yellow card.

Arsenal were winning 4-1 at the time and got a free kick in their own half. Xhaka was in no hurry to take the set-piece and center referee Andre Marriner brandished a yellow card.

The other issue the National Crime Agency will be looking at is why the odds for Xhaka getting a yellow card were higher in the final 10 minutes than they were before the game started. The Swiss international is however not one of the disciplined players in the Premier League, having been sent off twice last season and booked a further 10 times.
