  • Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney recounts how difficult it was when he learned that he will require surgery on his left knee
  • The surgery effectively ended the season for him with his absence being a big blow for Mikel Areta’s side who ended up finishing the season in fifth place
  • The budding full-back will also miss Scotland’s game against Ukraine in the race to qualify for this year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar

Kieran Tierney has explained how his current knee injury affected him. The Arsenal defender suffered an injury that required operation.

The operation effectively ended the season for him. Tierney was a regular member of Mikel Arteta’s side as they matched towards a top-four finish. He was also expected to play a very critical role in Scotland’s ambition to qualify for the World Cup.

Tierney recounts that he was doing his normal gym routine at Arsenal when he heard a click on his left knee as quoted by The Sun.

We played Wolves at home in February and I felt something in my knee in the first half. I told the physios and we tested it. But it was fine and it also wasn’t sore.
I carried on playing for Arsenal, then reported for Scotland duty and played twice with no problems. I came back completely fine. Then I was doing some leg exercises in the gym and my left knee clicked.
I instinctively felt it wasn’t right and that I should probably go for a scan. The scan result came back and suddenly I needed an operation. It was so unfortunate.
It has been tough working full days in the gym on your own. But you’ve got to keep on pushing yourself. There is no point for feeling sorry.

Tierney broke into the limelight when he was at Celtic and has since risen to be one of the most promising fullbacks in the world. He missed out on Arsenal’s failed push for a Champions League spot. The Gunners finished fifth with their North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, beating them to it.

He will also sit out of Scotland’s crunch game against Ukraine. The two sides meet on Wednesday in a World Cup decider. The winner will face Wales for a chance to compete at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, later this year.

The 24-year-old has set his eyes on returning to full training by the end of June.

Arsenal to reignite interest in Houssem Aourar

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Arsenal are looking to bolster their squad ahead of next season having finished in the 5th position during the just-concluded campaign.

Club manager Mikel Arteta would be disappointed that they failed to qualify for the Champions League, however, they are now looking at the possibility of signing France midfielder Houssem Aouar.

The Gunners have failed to finish in the top-four position for six consecutive seasons now, but they will hope to change their status in the next campaign.
