Mikel Arteta sends message to Arsenal fans after humbling defeat to Crystal Palace
FootballMikel Arteta Faulted for Offloading Aubameyang to Barcelona as Arsenal Struggle for Goals
- Arsenal's lack of a substantive and experienced striker has proved detrimental in their push to secure a top-four finish
- According to Gabby Agbonlahor, the decision to let Aubameyang leave in January was a wrong call by Mikel Arteta
- While the Gunners appeared to be coping without him in the early weeks of January, Arteta's men have struggled for goals in recent weeks
- The north Londoners have since dropped to sixth on the standings and are in danger of missing out on a Champions League spot
Former English footballer Gabby Agbonlahor has questioned Mikel Arteta's decision to offload Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Barcelona.
Aubameyang departed Arsenal during the January transfer window following a fall out with Arteta back in December 2021.
The fallout saw the Gabonese forward frozen out of the squad before he eventually sealed a switch to the Camp Nou.
Arsenal struggling without Aubameyang
Initially, the move to let Aubameyang depart appeared to be the right one as Arsenal were in top shape without him.
However, the north Londoners recent struggles have seen Auba's absence brought to the fore, with Arteta's charges unable to strike a rhythm.
The Gunners have lost three of their most recent matches, with their lack of goals proving detrimental in their push for a top-four finish.
The north Londoners have scored only once during the period - with the goal, a deflection, coming against Brighton.
Arteta's decision to offload Aubameyang criticised
Agbonlahor now believes Arsenal are going to regret the decision to sell Aubameyang - especially if they miss out on a top-four finish.
“They’ve let Aubameyang go for free, and he’s out there at Barcelona scoring goals,” the former Aston Villa striker told TalkSport.
“So if Arsenal don’t get top four, for me, the problem is that Arteta made a mistake letting him go," he added.
