  • Arteta says it is difficult to explain how his side lost to Southampton on Saturday
  • The Gunners slipped to sixth on the log after a third straight defeat in a row which was instigated by Jan Bednarek’s first half strike
  • The Arsenal boss also added Southampton’s victory was largely down to their goalkeeper

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has admitted his side’s form is something of great concern as the Gunners suffered a third straight defeat at the hands of Southampton.

Jan Bednarek scored the only goal of the game to condemn the Gunners to another lowly defeat as the race for a top four spot heated up.

If stats are anything to go by, Arsenal should have won the game quite comfortably as they enjoyed the lion’s share of possession as well as attempts on goal.

In total, Mikel Arteta’s side produced 23 shots but were unable to find a breakthrough, and it was mostly down to the Saints goalkeeper Fraser Foster.

Foster did excellently in the first half to deby Bukayo Saka from point blank range with the scores 0-0, and Arsenal failed to get any more clear-cut chances until late in the game.

Emile Smith Rowe also forced another brilliant save out of Foster after latching on to Yan Valery's attempted clearance, while Martin Odegaard pulled a low shot wide when he really should have hit the target.

At the back of the defeat, Arteta admitted it was difficult to explain how his side lost.

"If you saw the game, you'd say Arsenal had won comfortably.” He said as quoted by BBC.
"You have to put the ball in the net. You have to make the decisive moments count to win football matches and at the moment we're not doing that."

Arteta also heaped praise on the Saints goalkeeper, saying he was ‘exceptional’ in keeping out his team.

The defeat sees Arsenal drop to sixth place on the log, level on points with Manchester United, who have played a game more.

It does not get easier for Mikel Arteta as they face a tricky fixture against Cheslea on Wednesday, April 20.

"Ronaldo is carrying us"

Elsewhere, Manchester United fans all had the same opinion after Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat trick in the win against Norwich City.

United went into the game knowing all too well that a victory against the relegation-threatened side would propel them to within three points of the top four after Spurs slipped up against Brighton.

Despite Ronaldo initially giving his side a two-goal lead, United were pegged back, but the 37-year old scored a free kick in the 76th minute to secure all three points for his side.
