Arsenal’s determination to keep Mikel Arteta at the helm of their long-term project has not been shaken by a turbulent run of results, with the north London club pressing forward with plans to offer the manager a new contract extension, according to reports.

Negotiations between the club and Arteta’s representatives have reportedly been underway since as early as January, though no formal agreement is expected in the near term. Both parties are understood to be focused on the final weeks of the current campaign before committing to fresh terms, with further direct talks anticipated once the season concludes.

Arteta’s existing deal runs until 2027, removing any immediate urgency to finalise an extension. However, Arsenal are reportedly keen to establish early clarity around the next phase of their project, with the club’s hierarchy viewing the 43-year-old as indispensable to their vision — irrespective of how the current season concludes.

The move comes at a sensitive moment for the club. Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge has been dented by a defeat to Bournemouth, compounded further by Manchester City’s victory over Chelsea — a result that altered the complexion of the title race. Those setbacks follow earlier exits from both domestic cup competitions, making for a difficult end to what had promised to be a landmark campaign.

Nonetheless, Arsenal’s leadership remains resolute in their assessment of Arteta’s impact. Since taking charge in December 2019, the former midfielder has overseen a significant cultural and structural transformation at the Emirates, guiding the club from mid-table mediocrity to consecutive Premier League title challenges. Arsenal finished second in both the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons — their most sustained period of championship contention in well over a decade.

The reported contract discussions reflect an intent within the club to protect that trajectory. By initiating talks ahead of schedule, Arsenal appear to be taking steps to avoid the kind of managerial uncertainty that has destabilised other top clubs during pivotal periods of development.

Arteta, who has often spoken publicly about the importance of consistency and process in building a winning culture, has not commented directly on the reported negotiations. The club have also made no official statement on the matter at the time of writing.

With the Premier League season entering its decisive final stretch and Arsenal still mathematically alive in the title race, the coming weeks will be significant both on and off the pitch. The outcome of those fixtures may not determine whether Arteta stays — but they could shape the terms on which any new deal is eventually agreed.
