Arne Slot Compares Rio Ngumoha to Mohamed Salah After Liverpool’s 2-0 Win Over Fulham, Hints at UCL Start

Liverpool manager Arne Slot heaped praise on 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha following his standout performance against Fulham, drawing comparisons to Mohamed Salah and suggesting the teenager could feature in Tuesday's crucial Champions League second leg against PSG.

Rio Ngumoha announced himself at Anfield in emphatic fashion on Saturday, scoring his first goal at the ground as Liverpool beat Fulham 2-0 — and his manager did not hold back in his assessment of the teenager’s ability.

Arne Slot drew a direct comparison between the 17-year-old and club talisman Mohamed Salah when describing the goal, saying: “That’s what he did when he scored his goal, making the ball free by twisting and turning and then hitting it in like a Mo Salah finish.”

The Liverpool head coach went further, framing Ngumoha not merely as a prospect for the distant future but as a player ready to contribute now. “He’s not only the long-term future but also the near future,” Slot said after the final whistle. “I don’t think anyone is surprised he scored his first [Anfield] goal. He has such a special quality you don’t see very often in football anymore, dominating the one-v-one situations.”

“It’s pleasing to see that he did what we know makes him special,” Slot added.

Ngumoha was handed a starting berth for the Premier League fixture at Anfield, and his performance rewarded that decision. The result provided Slot with a degree of relief following a difficult spell for the club, which has come under growing pressure after heavy defeats to both Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain within the space of the last week.

That loss to PSG — a 2-0 defeat — now sets the stage for a demanding Champions League second leg at Anfield on Tuesday, where Liverpool must overturn a two-goal deficit to progress. The question of whether Ngumoha will be trusted with a starting role in that high-stakes tie has been raised, and Slot’s comments suggest the answer may be yes.

“I think he is ready. The question is can he do this two days later? Would he be able to play at that level? Yes,” the Dutchman said. “It’s not like at the beginning of the season when he was a young player getting experience with the first team. Now he is someone I can pick for any game, so also on Tuesday.”

Ngumoha’s rise mirrors a broader trend at Liverpool of integrated youth development under Slot, who took charge ahead of the 2024-25 season following Jürgen Klopp’s departure. The Anglo-Italian teenager, who joined Liverpool’s academy from Chelsea, has been regarded as one of England’s brightest young attacking talents, and Saturday’s display at Anfield will only strengthen that reputation.

With Liverpool’s Premier League title ambitions and European campaign both still alive, Tuesday’s match against PSG represents one of the most significant tests of Slot’s tenure. Whether Ngumoha lines up from the start in front of the Anfield crowd could be one of the defining selection calls of the club’s season.
