Arbeloa Backs Real Madrid to Turn Tide Against Bayern Munich in Champions League Second Leg

Real Madrid’s prospects of retaining the LaLiga title are dimming, but the Spanish club’s attention has firmly shifted to European competition, where a place in the next round of the UEFA Champions League remains within reach.

Interim head coach Álvaro Arbeloa addressed the media following a 1-1 draw with Girona FC — a result that extended Real Madrid’s winless run to three matches in all competitions — and made clear that the priority is now Wednesday’s return leg against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. Los Blancos head into that fixture trailing 2-1 on aggregate.

“We’re going to focus on Wednesday, on the enormous effort we have to make, and on preparing for the match,” Arbeloa said. The coach also indicated that the additional preparation time between fixtures would be used to address the shortcomings from the first leg. “We’ll have much more time than we did in the first leg to thoroughly analyze everything that happened in last Tuesday’s game and correct the things we didn’t do well,” he added.

Arbeloa was equally direct about the tactical adjustments he expects his squad to implement. “We’ll try to improve and strengthen what we did well to see how we can hurt them. We know that Wednesday is our game, we’re clear on that,” he stated, suggesting a degree of tactical confidence heading into a potentially decisive European night.

The former Real Madrid defender-turned-coach also issued a clear call for maximum effort from his players on the road. “We have to put all our energy into that game. We have to go to Germany determined to win and give it our all there,” Arbeloa said.

The domestic context makes the Champions League run all the more significant for the club. According to reports, Real Madrid’s LaLiga title challenge has been severely hampered by their recent form, leaving the Spanish capital side facing the prospect of a trophy-less domestic campaign. The outcome at the Allianz Arena could therefore define the entire season.

Historically, Real Madrid hold an exceptional record in European knockout football, having completed notable comebacks on multiple occasions across their record 15 UEFA Champions League title wins. The club’s ability to produce high-stakes results on the road in Europe remains one of the defining characteristics of their continental pedigree.

The second leg between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid is scheduled for Wednesday, with Real Madrid needing at least a 1-0 victory to force extra time, or a two-goal margin to advance in regulation. Bayern, playing at home in front of their own supporters at the Allianz Arena, will enter as favourites on aggregate, but Arbeloa and his squad have made clear they intend to make the tie competitive until the final whistle.
