Liverpool Football Club have confirmed that Andy Robertson will leave Anfield when his contract expires at the end of the 2025-26 season, drawing the curtain on a nine-year association between the Scottish international and the club.
The announcement follows a similar confirmation regarding Mohamed Salah, meaning two of the club’s most decorated players will depart in the same summer window — a development that signals a substantial transitional period ahead for Arne Slot‘s side.
Robertson, who turns 33 this summer, made 373 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions. During that time, the left-back accumulated an extensive honours list: two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup — a trophy haul matched by very few players in the club’s modern era.
In an official club statement, Liverpool acknowledged Robertson’s standing within the club’s history. “He will do so as a genuine Liverpool legend, having played a fundamental role in the successes of recent years over the course of his 373 appearances to date,” the statement read. The club also noted that any formal celebration of his legacy would be deferred until the campaign concludes, adding: “Celebration of Robertson’s Liverpool legacy is firmly on hold until the conclusion of the campaign, with the No. 26 fully focused on helping the Reds end 2025-26 as successfully as possible.”
Robertson originally joined Liverpool from Hull City in July 2017 for a reported fee of around £8 million — a transfer that, in hindsight, stands as one of the most cost-effective signings in Premier League history. He went on to become a cornerstone of Jürgen Klopp’s celebrated side and was appointed Scotland national team captain, a role he continues to hold.
The timing of the announcement places additional pressure on Liverpool’s remaining fixtures. The club currently sits fifth in the Premier League table, just one point ahead of Chelsea, meaning a top-four finish — and with it, Champions League qualification for next season — is far from assured. Simultaneously, Liverpool face a steep challenge in Europe, trailing Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 from the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
Robertson is expected to play a key role in both battles as the season enters its decisive phase, despite the cloud of his impending departure. Whether Liverpool can overturn the PSG deficit and consolidate their Premier League position will likely define how his final months at the club are remembered.
The back-to-back departures of Salah and Robertson represent a generational shift for Liverpool. Both players were central to the squad that won the club’s first league title in 30 years in 2020 and reached two Champions League finals in three seasons. Their exits, alongside continued uncertainty over the managerial direction following scrutiny of Slot’s tenure, suggest the club faces significant squad rebuilding ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
