AmaZulu Chairperson Sandile Zungu has never been afraid to speak his mind and he’s not starting now.

After parting ways with the former head coach, Benni McCarthy, Zungu explained that the reason for the dismissal was that the club needed change.

Zungu has since elaborated on his earlier statements, adding that the wheels came off this season, KickOff reported.

Zungu added that they wanted to clinch a top-four spot in the DStv Premiership and that they needed change to salvage pride this year.

"There is no way we would have clinched a top-four spot with Benni in charge, absolutely no way,” Zungu said.

AmaZulu are currently in ninth place on the table with 29 points, six points behind Orlando Pirates in fourth. With still seven games to play, AmaZulu are not out of the running for a top-four finish.

“We don’t believe the season is done, we’ve got seven more games to play, 21 points to play for if you add 21 to 29 we could reach 60 points.
“If you’ve got 60 points in the Premier Soccer League you are then likely to be in the top four,” Zungu added.

Sadly though, as many fans noted, 21 and 29 only add up to 50 points and not 60 as Zungu said. Mamelodi Sundowns currently sit on 51 points, with second-placed Royal AM only on 37. Even 50 points could be enough to see the Usuthu make the final four this season though.

AmaZulu have since appointed Brandon Truter as an interim coach, while they look for a permanent replacement for McCarthy, The South African confirmed.

AmaZulu and Benni McCarthy part ways, Usuthu Chairman Sandile Zungu confirms that the club needed a change

Benni McCarthy is no longer the coach of AmaZulu Football Club. AmaZulu confirmed earlier today that they had parted ways with the 44-year-old, but that the decision was an amicable one, Sports Brief reported.

Benni joined the KwaZulu-Natal based side in December 2020 and led them to the second spot in the DStv Premiership. When he joined the club, they were languishing in 13th, iDiski Times reported. Benni also led the team to their first CAF Champions League campaign.

This season has been a different story, though, as AmaZulu have drawn 14 games and sit in the ninth position. The record for most draws in a season is 20 and belongs to Swallows FC. In explaining why the club let go of McCarthy, Chairman Sandile Zungu explained that the Usuthu needed change, KickOff reported.
