Fulham manager Marco Silva has confirmed that Alex Iwobi remains sidelined and will play no part in Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Arsenal, ruling out the Super Eagles midfielder from what would have been a significant personal occasion.
The 29-year-old picked up a hamstring injury during Fulham’s goalless draw against Brentford two weeks ago and has not recovered sufficiently to be considered for selection. Iwobi had previously been part of Fulham’s starting plans before that setback, and his continued absence has reduced the attacking options available to Silva ahead of a fixture that carries weight for both the club and the player individually.
“Alex (Iwobi) is out still, plus Kevin,” Silva said in his pre-match squad update, confirming the Nigerian international would miss the game alongside another absentee. Silva also addressed the fitness status of defender Kenny Tete, indicating that a decision on his availability would depend on how he responded to training. “Kenny (Tete), we will have to see how he reacts to the last two sessions. He can probably be involved in the game,” the Portuguese manager added.
For Iwobi, the timing of the injury is particularly unfortunate. Having come through Arsenal’s academy system, the midfielder made his senior debut for the north London club and established himself in their first team before departing in 2019 to join Everton. He subsequently moved to Fulham, where he has become a key figure in the club’s midfield. A Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium would have represented a notable homecoming against the club that shaped his professional development.
Iwobi’s absence also comes at a delicate stage of the Premier League season, with Fulham navigating the final stretch of the campaign. The Cottagers have been in contention for a European place, and the midfielder’s creative output has been integral to their ambitions. Fulham most recently claimed a narrow victory against Aston Villa without Iwobi in the starting lineup, suggesting the squad has shown some capacity to cope, though his return remains a priority for the club’s push in the remaining fixtures.
With the season drawing toward its conclusion, the focus for both player and club will be on managing Iwobi’s recovery carefully to ensure he is available for the run-in. No specific return date has been publicly confirmed by Fulham, and further fitness assessments are ongoing according to Silva’s comments ahead of the Arsenal fixture.
