Alessandro Bastoni appeared to be Barcelona’s most coveted defensive signing heading into the summer transfer window, but the 26-year-old Italian international is now reportedly leaning toward honouring his contract at Inter Milan, which runs until 2028. According to Diario AS, the centre-back is reconsidering a move he had previously signalled his willingness to make, complicating what Barcelona manager Hansi Flick had identified as an absolute defensive priority.
The financial gulf between the two clubs sits at the heart of the impasse. Inter Milan have maintained a firm valuation of between €70 million and €80 million for the defender, while Barcelona — constrained by well-documented financial difficulties — have so far been able to table only an opening offer in the region of €50 million, supplemented by performance-related add-ons. The Catalan club’s inability to bridge that gap has stalled progress significantly.
Yet it is not solely the transfer economics driving Bastoni’s hesitation. According to reports, the primary factor behind his change of heart is the emotional response he received from the Inter faithful after a deeply difficult international outing. During Italy’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff final against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bastoni was shown a straight red card in the 41st minute — a dismissal that is widely considered to have directly contributed to Italy failing to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup. The Italian media were largely critical of the defender in the aftermath.
Inter Milan’s response, however, stood in sharp contrast. Head coach Cristian Chivu offered his public backing, while the club’s Curva Nord supporters displayed a banner at the training ground that read: “Head high and fear nothing; your people are by your side.” Sources suggest that this display of solidarity has had a profound impact on Bastoni’s thinking regarding his future.
The defender has been a key figure in Inter’s recent trophy-laden period. During his time at the club, Bastoni has contributed to two Serie A title wins, two Coppa Italia victories, and three Supercoppa Italiana triumphs — a record of success that adds further weight to any decision to remain in Milan.
For Barcelona, the reported shift in Bastoni’s position represents a significant setback in their defensive recruitment strategy. Flick’s side have been searching for reinforcements at the back, and Bastoni had been viewed as the ideal profile — technically proficient, left-footed, and experienced at the highest level of European club football. Should the deal collapse entirely, the Blaugrana will need to identify alternative targets before the window closes.
Inter Milan, meanwhile, will be keen to retain a player who remains central to their defensive structure. Whether the club will enter formal contract extension discussions to secure Bastoni beyond 2028 remains to be seen, but the current signals from the player’s camp suggest that a departure this summer is far from certain.
