Alejandro Garnacho Not Good Enough for Chelsea, Says Paul Robinson as Blues Consider Summer Sale

Former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson has cast doubt on Alejandro Garnacho's future at Chelsea, stating the £40 million signing lacks the quality to be a regular starter at Stamford Bridge. The 21-year-old has managed just one Premier League goal since joining from Manchester United last summer.

Alejandro Garnacho’s difficult debut season at Chelsea has drawn sharp criticism from former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who has questioned whether the Argentine winger has the quality required to hold down a starting berth at Stamford Bridge.

Garnacho made the switch from Manchester United to Chelsea in a £40 million deal last summer, but the 21-year-old has so far failed to justify that fee, scoring just once in the Premier League this season. His struggles have intensified speculation that the club may look to move him on when the transfer window reopens.

The winger faced his former club for the first time since the transfer on Saturday, entering the pitch as a first-half substitute at Stamford Bridge after Estevao was withdrawn with a hamstring injury. Despite the opportunity, Garnacho made little impression against Diogo Dalot, and Chelsea were unable to break down a well-organised Manchester United backline following Matheus Cunha’s opener — a result that inflicted a sixth defeat in seven Premier League games on the Blues.

Speaking to Stadium Astro, Robinson was direct in his assessment: “He’s not good enough to be a regular starter for Chelsea and Manchester United may have done some good business. He was supposed to be a game changer off the bench, obviously not that early on in the game, but for me, he runs down dead ends too many times.”

Robinson elaborated further on what he sees as a fundamental limitation in Garnacho’s game: “He gets the ball and immediately his head’s down and he’s gone. He’s very, very one-dimensional in the way that he attacks. Yes, he’s an attacking threat, but he’s quite easy to defend against.”

The criticism arrives at a turbulent moment for Chelsea, with the club’s managerial situation also reportedly under review. According to reports, Chelsea are set to replace head coach Levi Rosenior following the team’s run of poor results — a sequence that has significantly dented their hopes of a strong league finish.

For Garnacho, the numbers tell a stark story. Arriving with considerable expectations as a dynamic, direct wide attacker who had shown flashes of maturity at Old Trafford, he has instead found consistent form elusive in west London. One Premier League goal from a player acquired for £40 million would represent a significant return on investment failure if the season were to end there.

Manchester United, who sanctioned the sale amid their own financial restructuring under INEOS, may yet be vindicated by the transaction. Garnacho had registered eight Premier League goals and six assists in the 2023-24 season for United, making his output at Chelsea all the more underwhelming by comparison.

With the summer transfer window approaching, growing speculation surrounds whether Chelsea’s hierarchy will cut their losses on the Argentine after just one season, or persist with the winger in the hope that a change in management and circumstances might unlock his potential.
