Kano Pillars are preparing for one of the most consequential away fixtures in their recent history, travelling to Lagos to face Ikorodu City in a Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday 34 encounter that has significant implications at both ends of the table.

The Sai Masu Gida arrive in the commercial capital sitting 14th on the NPFL standings with 42 points — just two points above the relegation zone. A defeat on Sunday could drag the four-time champions back into the bottom three as the season approaches its final stages, leaving little room for error in the remaining fixtures.

Pillars enter the match with some momentum, however. A commanding 4-0 victory over Bendel Insurance in their previous outing provided the club with vital breathing room after what has been a difficult campaign spent largely near the foot of the table. That result offered a reminder of the quality within the squad when performing at their best.

Kano Pillars FC’s official social media platforms confirmed the squad held a training session at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Friday morning ahead of the journey south. “Snaps from our Friday morning training session at the Sani Abacha Stadium as preparations continue for Sunday’s NPFL Matchday 34 clash against Ikorodu City FC,” the club posted, alongside images of the squad described as “focused, determined, ready.”

Central to Pillars’ survival bid is former Super Eagles forward Ahmed Musa, who has occupied a unique dual role at the club this season — operating as both a registered player and the club’s General Manager. The 33-year-old, who previously represented Leicester City and CSKA Moscow at the highest level of European football, has made 21 appearances in the league this season, contributing five goals. Among those was a decisive winner against Katsina United in January, a performance that earned him the Fans’ Player of the Match award and underlined his continued influence in domestic football.

Musa was visibly engaged during Friday’s training session, with images circulated by the club reinforcing the focused environment ahead of the trip. His ability to influence matches in high-pressure situations remains a key asset for a Pillars side that will need goals and leadership in equal measure at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.

The hosts present a formidable challenge. Ikorodu City are unbeaten at home this season and are not simply playing for league position — the Oga Boys are chasing continental football, with a CAF Champions League or CAF Confederation Cup berth potentially within reach depending on results across the final matchdays. With so much riding on a positive outcome for Ikorodu, Sunday’s fixture is unlikely to be a passive affair.

The historical record between the two sides offers little comfort for the visitors. In the three previous meetings between Pillars and Ikorodu City, the home team has won each fixture. Most notably, Ikorodu’s last home encounter against Pillars ended in a 4-1 victory. The one source of encouragement for the travelling side is that Pillars won the reverse fixture this season 2-1, demonstrating they are capable of getting results against this opposition.

Beyond the league table, the stakes on Sunday crystallise the contrasting positions of two clubs at very different points in their respective trajectories. Ikorodu City are an emerging force with continental ambitions, while Kano Pillars — a club with four NPFL titles to their name — are fighting to preserve their top-flight status. For Musa, the match represents a unique test of whether he can fulfil both dimensions of his role at the club: the executive responsible for its long-term direction, and the player still capable of producing match-winning moments in critical situations.
