Ademola Lookman is not shying away from another high-profile fixture. Having played a central role in Atletico Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final victory over Barcelona, the Super Eagles forward is already turning his attention to a semi-final meeting with Arsenal.
The Nigerian winger scored the goal that proved decisive as Atletico sealed a 3–2 aggregate triumph over Barcelona. The contest had been finely balanced after Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres netted to drag Barcelona back into the tie, but Lookman’s intervention shifted momentum firmly back in Atletico’s favour at a critical juncture.
“Another top team. You are in the semifinals of the Champions League, top teams, so it’s amazing,” Lookman said, reflecting on the scale of the occasion and the quality of opposition that awaits Diego Simeone’s side.
Since arriving from Atalanta in the January transfer window, the 27-year-old has made an immediate impression in Madrid. Across 17 appearances in all competitions, Lookman has contributed six goals and four assists, bringing pace, directness, and clinical finishing to an Atletico side with genuine ambitions of lifting the European trophy this season.
Lookman’s record on the biggest stages is well-established. He famously scored a hat-trick for Atalanta in their 3–0 UEFA Europa League final victory over Bayer Leverkusen in May 2024 — one of the standout individual performances in European club football in recent years. His arrival at Atletico has been built on that foundation of big-game experience.
Despite the magnitude of the semi-final draw, Lookman stressed that his immediate focus remains on Atletico’s Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad, an indication of the squad’s ambition across multiple fronts this season. The Champions League semi-final against Arsenal, however, is unlikely to remain out of mind for long.
Arsenal, who are also engaged in a tightly contested Premier League title race, will represent a significant challenge. The Gunners have been one of the more consistent sides in England over recent seasons, and their presence in the final four of the Champions League underlines their standing in European football.
Should Atletico progress past Arsenal, they could face either Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain in the final, with both clubs also still involved in the competition at the semi-final stage.
For Lookman, who has emerged as one of Nigeria’s most influential footballers in recent years, the coming weeks present an opportunity to further cement his reputation among Europe’s elite. With form, confidence, and a proven ability to deliver in knockout football, the Super Eagles star is well-placed to make his presence felt once more.
