Ademola Lookman Criticised as ‘Worst Winger’ After Dismal Arsenal Display Ends Atletico Madrid’s Champions League Dream

Nigeria international Ademola Lookman faced a fierce social media backlash following a subdued performance in Atletico Madrid's UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg defeat to Arsenal, a result that also confirmed a trophyless debut half-season in Spain for the forward.

Ademola Lookman’s performance in Atletico Madrid’s UEFA Champions League semi-final exit against Arsenal on 5 May 2026 drew widespread criticism on social media, with supporters labelling the Super Eagles winger one of the worst performers of the entire season.

Arsenal’s victory at the Emirates Stadium secured the North London club’s place in the Budapest final — a historic achievement for the Gunners — but the evening was defined for many observers by Lookman’s failure to make any meaningful impact in the second leg. The 28-year-old Nigeria international was substituted before the hour mark, having been largely anonymous throughout his time on the pitch.

The contrast with his first-leg display was particularly noted. Supporters pointed out that Lookman had offered a more threatening presence in the opening fixture, but was unable to replicate that form when Diego Simeone’s side urgently required an attacking outlet to preserve their European campaign. He was unable to penetrate Mikel Arteta’s defensive structure or generate clear-cut chances as Atletico’s hopes of reaching the final faded.

Social media reactions were swift and unsparing. “Ademola Lookman over these 2 legs has been the worst winger I’ve seen all season and I have to watch Garnacho and Neto every week,” wrote user @willreyner on 5 May 2026. Another account, @mxdric, posted: “This Lookman performance is as close as you get to a 0/10 without scoring an own goal or getting a red card.” A third user, @BCNOgi, added: “Lookman genuinely worst footballer I’ve ever seen. Of course he knocked us out of two cups. Of course.”

Other reactions referenced Lookman’s prior career trajectory. “You can see why and how Lookman failed in the Premier League,” posted @UtdAlen, alluding to the forward’s earlier stints in English football before he established himself as one of Serie A’s standout players at Atalanta. One user drew a pointed comparison to a previous high-profile moment: “Where was this version of Lookman vs Barça,” wrote @NealGardner_, referencing Lookman’s celebrated hat-trick against Barcelona in the 2023-24 Europa League final — a performance that had cemented his reputation as a big-game player.

The criticism extended beyond Lookman alone. User @Bd_irB_ll wrote: “What an absolute disgrace of a performance from Griezmann and Lookman,” indicating that dissatisfaction with Atletico’s attacking output was more broadly felt.

The result also carries significant consequences for Lookman’s individual season record. Having already suffered defeat in the Copa del Rey final prior to the Champions League exit, the forward is now certain to end his debut half-season with Atletico Madrid without a trophy. It marks a stark reversal from his final campaign at Atalanta, where he was central to the club’s 2023-24 Europa League triumph and finished as one of Serie A’s most productive attackers.

Atletico Madrid’s elimination means Arsenal will represent the UEFA Champions League’s last remaining club from north London in the Budapest final. For Lookman and Atletico, the focus will now turn to consolidating their La Liga position as the Spanish season draws to a close, with no silverware to show for what had been an ambitious European run under Simeone.
