Former Ghana and Hearts of Oak defender Dan Quaye insists the practice of drinking and smoking is a common thing among footballers.

Dan Quaye was reacting to critics for blasting Hearts of Oak players for allegedly indulging in the practice.

The ex-Ghana defender in an interview with Agyenkwa FM said he sees nothing wrong with enjoying yourself by drinking or smoking, claiming he got drunk anytime Hearts beats Kotoko.

"Drinking and smoking are everywhere in the world of football. In Germany, Spain, England and other countries, players take cups of beer to regain lost energy after a game, others smoke as a sign of enjoyment after a match win," he told Agyenkwa FM as quoted by Pulse.

"It's only in our country that when a player is seen drinking then it's a taboo and for that matter become a big news in the public"
"In my playing days, I used to drink a bottle of Guinness. When we win a game, it's just a moment to feel happy. Even when we beat Kotoko to win the super cup, I drunk one bottle of Guinness after the game."

Players of Hearts of Oak were lambasted by Board Member of the club, Dr Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe, claiming some players drunk and smoked before games.

Dan Quaye was a member of Ghana's squad at the FIFA World Cup in 2006.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Dr Nyaho-Nyaho Tamakloe, a Hearts of Oak board member, has outlined the reason behind the club's underwhelming performance in the just-concluded season.

The Accra-based club mounted a spiritless league title defence losing out on the top-flight domestic crown to arch-enemy Asante Kotoko, finishing in a disappointing seventh spot.

The Phobians also failed to glitter in Africa, dropping out in the CAF Champions League to Moroccan outfit Wydad Athletic Club.
