  • The England national football team had already secured qualification and the game was more of a formality

England secured their qualification for the 2022 World Cup in style as they thrashed San Marino 10-0 for their first double-figure scoreline since 1964, Sky Sports reports.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane continued his fine form for his country as he hit four goals in the first half, a performance that saw him go level with Gary Lineker on 48 international goals for The Three Lions.

Just like in the Albania game, it was Manchester United defender Harry Maguire who set his side up for victory with the opener – a header, before Bukayo Saka’s deflected shot made it 2-0.

Then came Harry Kane who stole the show with two penalties and following it up with a brace of trademark finishes.

Despite being 4-0 up at the break, England kept the foot on the gas and Arsenal talent Emile-Smith Rowe, who was only called up to the squad for the first time in November, scored his first international goal in style.

Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings also got in on the act with an angled header, before substitute Tammy Abraham got in on the act. Saka then rounded off a miserable night for San Marino in the 79th minute.

Kane closing in on England goalscoring record

It was yet another flawless performance from Harry Kane, who now find himself behind only Sir Bobby Charlton and Wayne Rooney in the list of all-time goal scorers for England.

The Spurs striker is now only five goals behind Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 and from his performances for England, it will come as no surprise if he surpasses the record, fast.

As far as England are concerned, the nation have been frightening in 2021, scoring a massive 52 goals, 16 of those belonging to Harry Kane.

Portugal thrust into playoffs

Legit.ng earlier reported that on Sunday, Portugal’s World Cup ambitions were dealt a blow after a last-minute winner by Serbia plunged Cristiano Ronaldo’s nation into the playoffs.

The hosts went into the game knowing a draw would be enough to send them to the World Cup finals as they had a far superior goal difference to Serbia going into the decider.

But Mitrovic’s strike in the 90th minute sealed the win for Serbia who are through to the World Cup, as Portugal will now get another attempt through the play-offs in March.
