The French Ligue 1 degenerated into chaos on Sunday night after Dimitry Payet was struck with a bottle as Lyon vs Marseille cracker was abandoned.

SunSport are reporting that Payet was about taking a corner kick when a thug threw a filled plastic bottle which hit the former West Ham United man across his cheek.

The player took a few steps before going down the turf clutching his face as his Marseille teammates rushed in his cover while Lyon's stars pleaded with their own fans to stop.

The match official Ruddy Buquet stopped play and took both teams back into the tunnel, with Marseille manager Jorge Sampaoli furiously complaining to the officials.

It was gathered that injured Payet was on the pitch for about four minutes while medical personnel attended to the 38-cap France international.

After sometime, he walked off the pitch as he pressed a bag of ice against his face in a bid to reduce the swelling.

The match was suspended for about an hour before Lyon took to social media to share pictures of their players warming up again.

BBC Sport reports that two hours after the incident, they took to social media again to confirm the game would not be restarting.

Lionel Messi scores first Ligue 1 goal

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi finally scored in the Ligue 1 and it was a trademark goal as PSG moved 13 points clear at the top of the table following a 3-1 win over Nantes on Saturday, November 20.

PSG finished the game with 10 men after goalkeeper Keylor Navas was shown a red card after 65 minutes.

The Parisians were off the mark as early as the second minute, with Kylian Mbappe scoring the fastest goal of his career so far.

Nantes would go on to equalise in the second half through a Randal Kolo Muani back-heel before going behind once again via Dennis Appiah's freak own goal.

Fans concerned about Lionel Messi

MLegit.ng earlier reported that Lionel Messi was caught on camera standing mute for 20 seconds during Paris Saint-Germain's 2-1 win over Lille.

The Argentine star was substituted in the second half as the six-time Ballon d'Or winner was holding his hamstring.

The 34-year-old is yet to score his first league for the club but has registered three strikes in the Champions League for the Parisians.
