Four-time African Footballer of the year Samuel Eto’o has backed the African Cup of Nations to take place in January 2022 Africa Top Sports reports.
With just a few weeks to the start of the competition, several rumours erupted that suggested Africa’s biggest footballing competition might suffer another postponement.
According to the BBC, FIFA President Gianni Infantino wants the Afcon to be moved from the current winter window and played between September and November as part of a revised international match schedule.
However, Eto’o who emerged as the Cameroonian FA President just recently has put to bed the rumours around the AFCON revealing nothing should stop Cameroon from delivering a masterpiece when the host the rest of Africa in January.
I do not see a convincing reason to postpone the Africa Cup of Nations. The Euro was played during the pandemic with full stadiums.” Eto’o said.
“They played in many cities in Europe, so why shouldn’t we play in Cameroon? If some think we should postpone the tournament, they need to give a good reason.”
The African Cup of Nations is usually played between January and February every two years but was played in June and July when Egypt hosted in 2019.

Earlier Sportsbrief had reported the backlash from football fans on social media amid growing concerns the AFCON might be suffering another postponement after being moved twice already.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe was amongst those being heavily criticized online alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino who has made known his thoughts on moving the AFCON to a later date.
The African Cup of Nations is scheduled to kickstart on 9th January, 2022 with the final slated for the 6th of February, 2022.
