Mention the name modern legend on the managerial front and many fans who know their football will probably have Sir Alex Ferguson as the first man that comes to mind.

The former Manchester United manager was the trending topic for most of Tuesday, December 31 as he turned 78 years.

Majority of fans took to social media to celebrate a manager who not only placed Manchester United on the world map as a footballing powerhouse, but also won a series of titles while at it.

Looking back at Sir Alex’s career in retrospect, there are few, if any manager who can replicate his success.

As the decorated manager turned 78, TUKO.co.ke looked at some of his achievements which may go unmatched for a lifetime as analysed by Opta Joe.

1. The most obvious Ferguson achievement is winning a staggering 13 Premier League titles in the 27 years he spent with the club. This is more than twice any manager has achieved in the English top flight.

2. Ferguson also holds the enviable record of managing a cool 1,500 matches at Manchester United, 70% of his club games were with the Red Devils.

3. The Scot also holds the record for the most wins in the Premier League since its inception with 528 wins.

4. As far as matches managed in the EPL are concerned, Fergie held the record with 810 games until it was overtaken by former Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who has managed a total of 828 games in the Premier League.

5. Ferguson also boasts an incredible average of 2.16 points per game for a manager who has managed over 100 games in the Premier League. Only Man City manager Pep Guardiola has a better average with 2.37 points per game; but Pep has only been in the Premier League three years.

6. In the Premier League’s history, Ferguson holds the record for most Premier League manager of the month (27) and Manager of the Year (11) awards.

7.During his Manchester United tenure, Fergie has played against 48 different opponents in the Premier League and has won against every single one of them at some point.

8. On the European front, despite the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in contention, Fergie has established himself as one of the managers to scoop the Champions League more than once. Only Carlo Ancelotti (including one Intertoto Cup win) and Giovanni Trapattoni have won as many UEFA club competition titles as Sir Alex Ferguson did during his managerial career (7).

9. On a personal level , Fergie’s managerial career spanned a staggering 39 years, making him one of the longest serving managers.
