The Nigeria Football Federation’s quest to hire a foreign coach for the Super Eagles have hit a brick wall as the body is not receiving the support of politicians and lawmakers.

Over 100 coaches have applied to become the next coach of the three-time African Cup of Nations champions following the departure of Jose Peseiro in February.

According to the Daily Post, Emmanuel Amuneke, Domenec Torrent, and Antonio Conceicao are the three coaches the NFF are considering after making the final three-man shortlist for the Super Eagles coaching job.

Torrent is the number one candidate among the foreign coaches with Conceicao the second choice, while former international Amunike is the only local coach being considered for the vacant job.

The NFF has been given a two-week deadline to appoint a new coach for the national team by Sports Minister John Enoh but employing a foreign coach may now be an option that will be thrown out of the window due to its opposition.

Lawmakers kick against foreign coach

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s National Assembly has washed its hands against hiring another foreign coach for the Super Eagles with the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers approaching, The Guardian reports.

The lawmakers are urging the NFF and the Sports Ministry to put the integrity of the country first before appointing a new coach after questioning the body’s financial capabilities of paying another expatriate for the job.

The NFF has previously relied on funding from the Federal Government to pay former foreign coaches and the lawmakers are insisting the case will be different this time if they decide to hire a foreigner rather than a local coach.

Enoh talks on Super Eagles vacancy

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the Super Eagles remain without a coach ahead of the crunch 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series.

However, as fans' impatience mounts amidst the prolonged recruitment process, Nigeria's sports minister, Enoh, has provided an update on the NFF's progress in appointing the next leader for the Super Eagles.

Enoh insists the responsibility of appointing a coach for the Super Eagles lies with the NFF and that a new coach will be announced in the next two weeks.
