  • Finidi George has won his first match as Nigeria's coach
  • The Super Eagles defeated bitter rivals in a friendly clash
  • Ex-Nigeria star feels George should be hired as head coach

Finidi's George's tenure as Nigeria's coach began with a massive 2-1 win over arch-rivals Ghana in Morocco.

George was appointed as caretaker coach a few days ago, weeks after Jose Peseiro left his role as head coach.

Former Super Eagles international Edema Fuludu believes George has all the qualities needed for a head coach.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are looking to hire the right person, considering two major tournaments are on the horizon.

Winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will be the immediate goal for Nigeria's next coach. Peseiro, alongside George, led the Super Eagles to the final of the 2023 edition, but they narrowly lost to hosts Ivory Coast, per BBC.

The 2026 World Cup will be important for Nigeria. They haven't played at a World Cup since 2018 and have started poorly in the qualifiers.

Pitso Mosimane, Herve Renard, George, Emmanuel Amuneke, and many others have been mentioned as possible successors to p[eseiro.

It remains to be seen who will get the job in the coming months.

Is George the best option for Nigeria?

Fuludu listed a few attributes that make George a perfect head coach for the Super Eagles.

“Finidi is calm, composed, and has coaching qualifications to handle the team perfectly. As far as I am concerned, he is not someone that can be easily influenced," he said via Complete Sports.
“He is capable of handling the players, having understudied the former foreign coach, Jose Peseiro,” he said.

He also reiterated the need to hire a local coach.

“I have been saying that employing an indigenous coach for Super Eagles will bring the best out of our national players because he will understand the team better than the foreigners,” he said.

George has passed the first test with flying colours. His side faces Mali later this week with a chance to make it two wins from two.

Iheanacho lauds George

Sports Brief earlier reported on Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho lauding George after their win over Ghana.

The former Manchester City striker suggested that the former Real Betis star gets the permanent job.
