  • Algeria are keen to sign Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro as their next manager
  • Peseiro led Nigeria to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast
  • The Portuguese manager’s contract with Nigeria expires at the end of February

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has named Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro as part of a three-man shortlist to replace Djamel Belmadi after his sacking as coach of the Desert Foxes.

The 63-year-old tactician caught the eye of Algerians after leading Nigeria to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and are ready to triple his salary to lure him to take up their managerial post.

According to Own Goal Nigeria, Algeria are willing to offer Peseiro $280,000 monthly to dump the Super Eagles, the same amount the former coach Belmadi earned before his axing this month.

The Portuguese coach is presently on a $60,000 salary with Nigeria, with his present deal with the Super Eagles set to expire at the end of February, although talks have begun with the Nigerian Football Federation to extend his deal.

If discussions with Peseiro fail due to his commitment to Nigeria, Algeria would turn to the third option on their list, Vladimir Petkovic, a Bosnian who previously coached French Ligue 2 team, Bordeaux.

Amuneke targets Super Eagles job

Meanwhile, former Barcelona winger and Nigerian football icon Emmanuel Emuneke has thrown his hat into the ring for the Super Eagles coaching job as speculations surround the future of Peseiro, Pulse Sports reports.

Amuneke, with his extensive experience in Nigerian football as both a player and a coach, has indicated a strong desire to head the national team.

Peseiro's future with the Super Eagles is under scrutiny despite Nigeria’s impressive performance at AFCON 2024, which fulfilled the contract prerequisite for a prospective extension.

Taribo blames Peseiro for AFCON failure

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that legendary Super Eagles defender Taribo West has faulted Peseiro and the entire coaching staff for failing to devise a different game plan in the loss to Ivory Coast.

Nigeria advanced to the AFCON final by adopting a pragmatic approach, which served them well but backfired in the final.

Nigeria's unexpected run to the competition ended in a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to hosts, Ivory Coast.
