The 'stuff of dreams', are fitting words to describe the season La Liga club Girona is experiencing.

The Catalan minnows, who only returned from the second tier in the 2022-23 season, have themselves punching largely above their weight under the guidance of coach Miguel Angel Sanchez Munoz, popularly referred to as Michel.

The 48-year-old, who coasted them through to a 10th place finish through the 2022-23 season, now has Los Blanquivermells seated in first place on this season’s standing ahead of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Despite losing key players in the summer transfer window, Girona, who reportedly spent around ₤15 million in transfer fees, according to Fotmob, find themselves leading the race for the La Liga title.

However, following the commanding victory against Xavi Hernandez’s side, Girona’s coach, Michel, has opened up on his side’s title chance.

Michel on Girona’s title chance

The former Rayo Vallecano coach maintained a humble and grounded tone regarding his team's ambitions.

Despite the impressive on-field performance that places them as frontrunners, Michel emphasised that winning the league is not their primary goal. He expressed uncertainty about their chances, as quoted by Madrid Universal stating:

"Winning the league is not the goal. I don't know if we can win it."

While Michel's words convey a sense of realism about the team's objectives, the on-field performance suggests a determined side eager to compete for the La Liga title.

Although there are still many matches to be played before the Spanish league concludes, it seems widely agreed that Girona is well on track to potentially secure their first-ever La Liga crown.

Xavi sets unwanted record with Girona defeat

Sports Brief in a previous report highlighted Barcelona’s Xavi Hernadez has set an unwanted record for the club following the defeat against Girona.

The defeat against the Catalan club condemned the 43-year-old to a horrible win percentage, which is worse than that of former coach Quique Setien and only bettered by the shambolic tenure of Dutch manager Ronald Koeman.
