FootballBallon d’Or: Rema Greets Mbappe, Haaland but Forgets Messi, Video
- Afrobeats singer Rema made history as he became the first Nigerian to perform at the Ballon d'Or event
- The Mavin Records signee had an 'incident' with Lionel Messi that has captured football fans' attention
- The Calm Down crooner's performance at the event earned a lot of praise from Nigerians on social media
Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, known professionally as Rema, thrilled high-profile guests at the 67th Ballon d'Or Awards ceremony on October 30.
The Mavin Records signee became the first Nigerian musician to perform at the Ballon d'Or ceremony and he did not disappoint.
Rema performed his global hit song, Calm Down at the event and was seen exchanging pleasantries with some of the football superstars in attendance.
However, his act of sharing pleasantries with Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe, and other top stars has also caught attention for the wrong reasons.
This is because he forgot to greet the Ballon d'Or winner, Lionel Messi.
Rema forgets to shake Messi's hand
The moment stirred reactions from fans on social media.
@Sir_Kwofae saw the funny side of things:
"The moment Rema shook the hands of Mbappe, Bellingham, Vinicius Junior, Haaland, Bernardo Silva, Ikay Gundogan, Rodri and left Messi hanging 😹😹😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😹🤣🤣🤣"
@realenochafl had a possible explanation:
"Rema took precautionary measures. Before Messi’s bodyguard tackles him from nowhere 😂"
@MrKingsjnr commented:
"Rema was afraid to touch the GOAT"
@Denix001 thought it was deliberate:
"That’s all the hint you need to know that the award would go to Messi."
@Thomas_kelvin16 defender Rema:
"He does not mean it the way you took it"
Messi was later crowned the winner of the 2023 Ballon d'Or award ahead of Haaland and Mbappe, which is a record-extending eighth, according to a report by Sky Sports.
