The Croatian joined the Spanish League defending champions in 2012 in a deal around £30 million - winning four Champions Leagues, two La Ligas and three Club World Cups since then.
Daily Mail quoting Spanish news programme El Chiringuito de Jugones reports that Mourinho has been in contact with the 2018 World Cup finalist in a bid to bring him back in 2021.
Mourinho was responsible for signing Modric for Real in 2012 and he has gone ahead to score 24 goals and 56 assists in 362 appearances since then.
The Croatian will be free to speak with any club of his choice when the January transfer window opens in a few days' time. He said last month:
"I feel good, I feel strong, and I still have plenty of football in my legs and strengths to continue, but let's see what happens in the future.
"I've said many times and I'll say it again, I'm very happy at Madrid and I'd love to end my career here, but let's see what happens.
"Who wouldn't want to end their career at Real Madrid? But it depends on a lot of things. But there is no-one who'd be happier than me to continue at Real Madrid."
