  • Manchester United were condemned to a 2-3 defeat by Galatasaray at Old Trafford
  • Andre Onana came under heavy criticism following the embarrassing defeat
  • However, Paul Scholes contends that the defence was largely to blame for the result

Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes has singled out two players for blame following their Champions League defeat against Galatasaray.

United were humbled 2-3 by the Turkish giants during their Group A meeting on Tuesday night at Old Trafford.

Despite taking the lead twice, The Guardian reports that Galatasaray mounted a resilient performance to sink the Red Devils.

Summer signing, Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring for United in the 17th minute before Wilfried Zaha equalised just six minutes later.

The Dane restored the hosts' lead in the 67th minute, only for Kerem Akturkoglu and Mauro Icardi to find the back of the net for the visitors.

Scholes blames United duo after defeat

While Andre Onana came under sharp fire for his role in the defeat, Scholes has directed his criticism elsewhere.

The legendary midfielder appeared to lay the blame on defence, singling out Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof for being soft and weak.

"United really had to win this, your first home Champions League game. This is a terrible result," Metro UK quoted Scholes as saying.
"I’m not sure where [Raphael] Varane is going. [Victor] Lindelof is lost in the middle of the pitch. So soft and weak. They were so open in that central defensive area, they gave chances away," he added.

United's defeat leaves them sitting bottom of Group A with no point, behind FC Copenhagen, Galatasaray, and Bayern Munich.

Erik ten Hag's charges will be back in action against Brentford on Saturday in the Premier League.

Varane roasted over UCL comments

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Varane may have spoken too soon after Champions League comments he made before Man United's meeting with Galatasaray seemingly came back to bite him.

United's defeat came just hours after Varane claimed that United could win this season's Champions League title.

The centre-back made the claims on Monday, hours before the Red Devils' meeting with Galatasaray.
