FootballBarcelona Cleared to Play in Champions League Next Season by UEFA
- UEFA has cleared Barcelona to play in the 2023/24 Champions League
- The Catalans are being investigated for corruption by the Spanish Authorities
- Barcelona have won the Champions League five times with their last in 2015
UEFA will not hinder Barcelona from participating in the 2023/24 Champions League despite the club still being investigated for corruption back home in Spain.
The Catalans were charged to court by the Spanish authorities after it emerged they had been making payments to former Spain’s referees chief Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira.
According to Goal, UEFA has now released a statement confirming Barcelona will not be expelled from the Champions League despite investigations not being concluded.
“The UEFA Appeals Body has taken the following decision with regards to the admission of FC Barcelona in the 2023/24 UEFA club competitions.
“The proceedings concerning the admission of FC Barcelona to the 2023/2024 UEFA club competitions are suspended and may be resumed, ex officio, or at the request of the Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors (EDIs) in charge of the case.”
Barcelona won the Champions League a total of five times in 1991/92, 2005/06, 2008/09, 2010/11, and 2014/15, but the Catalan club has failed to progress beyond the group stage in the last two editions.
Juventus kicked out of Europe
Meanwhile, UEFA has kicked Juventus out of this season's Europa Conference League for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, BBC reports.
The Serie A giants were accused of submitting incomplete financial information and fined £17.14m by the European football governing body for transactions between 2012 and 2019.
Juventus will only have to pay half of their fine if their financial records for the next three years comply with UEFA regulations and will be readmitted into Europe from the 2024/25 season.
