  • Ilkay Gundogan dazzled in the FA Cup final with two goals to keep Manchester City's treble hopes alive
  • The German midfielder left Manchester United's Casemiro for dead with a silky turn
  • Casemiro failed to impact the game as expected, with Pep Guardiola's hybrid formation causing problems

The 2023 FA Cup final on June 3 between the two Manchester clubs was a game that delivered enjoyment to neutrals, fulfillment to City fans, and despair for their counterparts in red.

Ilkay Gundogan continued with his Zinedine Zidane-esque end-of-season form by banging in two volleys to ensure Manchester City's hunt for the treble remains intact.

Many will agree that perhaps David de Gea should have done better to save both goals, but take nothing away from the German's strikes.

The skipper, alongside John Stones and Kevin De Bruyne, dictated the game with aura and composure, rekindling memories of the famous Barcelona trio of Xavi Hernandez, Sergio Busquets, and Andres Iniesta.

The midfield was always going to play an integral part in deciding who got to succeed Liverpool as the winners of the trophy. It was a chance for another tried and tested player, Casemiro, to pit his wits against Pep Guardiola's well-oiled machine.

Gundogan's skill on Casemiro

But the Brazilian endured a torrid afternoon, which was also partly due to Christian Eriksen's lacklustre performance alongside him.

At one point, City sat back and soaked up pressure, as they often do, before Manuel Akanji released Gundogan. Casemiro saw an opportunity to close him down and perhaps take the ball away from him, only for the former Real Madrid man to be sent tumbling to the Wembley turf after a filthy turn from Gundogan.

On a good day, the Brazilian would have easily pinched back possession, or left a mark on the opponent. But with the kind of form Gundogan has hit of late, there was no stopping him.

The common consensus among social media users was that Gundogan 'sent Casemiro back to Sao Paulo'.

Gundogan finally gets FA medal

Sports Brief also reported that Gundogan finally received his FA Cup medal after missing one on Saturday.

Despite his heroics, the German and Kevin De Bruyne did not get winners' medals after the final. Luckily for the Belgian, he received one from Ederson, with Prince William, the Prince of Wales, appearing to explain to Gundogan why he had missed out on a medal.

However, the 32-year-old has since laid his hands on a medal.
