It was all about the Nigerian side in the early exchanges as the Flying Eagles pressed high while maintaining possession.

Argentina failed to hold on to the ball and struggled to generate play as the west Africans continued to pile on the pressure, Soccernet reports.

In the 22nd minute, Solomon Agbalaka had the chance to put Nigeria ahead following a delicious ball from Tochukwu Nnadi's free kick, but he was flagged as offside.

The hosts came close in the latter stages of the first half but were quelled by solid defending from Nigeria. After Veliz and Carboni tried to find a space, the effort was cleared to the corner.

There was a moment of drama in the 59th minute as Tochukwu Nnadi's effort hit the bar, with the Flying Eagles maintaining their impressive performance.

The opening goal came only in the 61st minute when Ibrahim Muhammad received a through-ball upfront before firing it low past goalkeeper, Gomes.

Argentina put up a fight, but the Nigerian defence stood resolute. As the game entered stoppage time, Rilwanu Sarki put the icing on the cake with a flying header to make it two-nil.

The final score was Nigeria 2-0 Argentina.

There were incredible scenes as supporters of the home team watched haplessly, with mouths agape, while the Nigerian celebrated the win.

Gambia create World Cup upset

Sports Brief earlier reported that west African nation, Gambia created a World Cup upset following a 2-1 win over tournament favourites, France.

Against all odds, the Young Scorpions proved their mettle, outplaying their counterparts and maintaining a 100 per cent run at the tournament.

The Gambian under-20 team next take on Uruguay in a Round of 16 clash slated for June 1, with many wondering if more upsets are in the works.
