However, the veteran's father and agent is anxious about Barcelona's pursuit as he reportedly wants to confirm his son's future as soon as possible.

Jorge Messi is also said to be unsure about the Catalans’ financial plan and how they will stick to FFP rules.

According to Romero, Messi Senior met with La Liga this week to find out about Barcelona's viability plan, but remains suspicious of both the club and the Spanish league.

The journalist added Jorge Messi saw several contradictions between the Catalan's financial state and the FFP system.

Romero has also claimed there will be an important meeting between La Liga and Barcelona to discuss this viability plan, with the league not convinced.

Xavi and his staff at the league champions are still confident that Messi’s return will go through, but the club’s board is not fully convinced about the situation - and neither is Jorge.

Plenty of options for Messi

As Marca has reported, the Argentine veteran has plenty of admirers and will not be short of options come the summer.

As things stand, Messi has not renewed his contract with Paris Saint-Germain and looks set to seek different pastures.

The most concrete offer has come from Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia - in what would be a record-breaking deal - but this is not the only offer on the table. Barcelona have made clear their interest in bringing Messi back 'home' to Camp Nou.

Messi to Barcelona makes sense

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Barcelona coach, Xavi's verdict on Messi's return to the Camp Nou, claiming the move would make sense for everyone involved.

The Argentine swapped Barca for PSG in 2021, on the back of La Blaugrana's ailing financial situation, but has been linked with a potential return in the summer.
