  • Lionel Messi added yet another silverware to his collection on Saturday with Paris Saint-Germain
  • PSG were crowned this season's Ligue 1 champions after their 1-1 draw with Strasbourg
  • This was Messi's 43rd trophy in his career, having won majority of those with Barcelona

Lionel Messi has joined Dani Alves as one of the most decorated players in history.

The Argentine football legend achieved the landmark feat on Saturday, May 27, following Paris Saint-Germain's French Ligue 1 triumph.

PSG were crowned champions for the 11th time with a game to spare after their 1-1 draw with Strasbourg.

According to ESPN, World Cup winner Messi put PSG ahead after he was set up by Kylian Mbappe in the 59th minute before former PSG striker Kevin Gameiro equalized for Strasbourg with 11 minutes left on the clock.

The draw was still enough to secure PSG the French top-flight title as it meant Lens, who were their closest challengers, had no chance against them.

Messi becomes most decorated player

PSG's triumph now means that Messi is the most decorated footballer in history.

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner has now won a record 43 trophies during his illustrious football career.

According to GiveMeSport, the Barcelona icon is joint-top with former teammate Dani Alves, who has also won 43 trophies in his career.

Sports Brief takes a look at the top 10 players with the most trophies after Messi's Ligue 1 glory:

10. Karim Benzema - 34 trophies

The French football legend has won a total of 34 trophies in his career.

Twenty-eight of those trophies have been won during his time with Real Madrid.

9. Victor Baia - 34 trophies

The Portuguese goalkeeping icon won 34 trophies in his career, with the majority of those coming during his time with Porto.

He also won five trophies after he moved to Barcelona.

8. Cristiano Ronaldo - 34 trophies

Ronaldo has enjoyed an illustrious football career across his stints with Real Madrid, Juventus, and Manchester United.

He, however, fell short of winning a trophy this season despite his move to Al Nassr.

7. Gerard Pique - 35 trophies

The Barcelona legend may have hung his boots in 2022.

However, he is still up there when it comes to trophies won. Much of his success came with Barcelona.

6. Kenny Dalglish - 35 trophies

Like Pique, Dalglish also won 35 trophies in his career.

The Liverpool legend enjoyed success with the Reds and Scottish giants Celtic.

5. Ryan Giggs - 36 trophies

One thing with Ryan Giggs was his longevity.

The Manchester United legend enjoyed one of the longest stints of any footballer.

He won all the 36 trophies with the Red Devils.

4. Andres Iniesta - 37 trophies

The Barcelona legend is widely regarded as one of the finest midfielders of all time.

He achieved much of his success during his stint at the Camp Nou.

3. Maxwell - 37 trophies

The former defender enjoyed considerable success at Ajax, Inter Milan, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain.

2. Dani Alves - 43 trophies

The Brazilian icon has, for the longest time, been the most decorated player in history.

He won almost every available trophy to win.

1. Lionel Messi - 43 trophies

And finally on this list is Lionel Messi.

The PSG ace has a chance of adding to his tally as he is still going strong despite entering the sunset years of his career.

Messi smashes Ronaldo's record

In a related publication, Sports Brief reported that Lionel Messi became the most prolific footballer in Europe's top five leagues thanks to his title-winning goal for Paris Saint-Germain's 1-1 draw with Strasbourg on Saturday, May 27.

Messi's effort from close range after receiving a pass from Kylian Mbappe took his tally for the season to 16 goals, sealing the French Ligue 1 crown for the Parisians in what will be his penultimate game in France.
