  • Portugal defender Joao Cancelo has won two league titles this season with different teams
  • The Portuguese full-back joined Bayern Munich on loan from Manchester City in January
  • Cancelo was part of the Bayern team that was crowned 2022/23 Bundesliga champions

Joao Cancelo is arguably the luckiest defender in football at the moment after ending the 2022/23 season, winning two domestic titles.

The Portugal defender started the season with Manchester City, where he made 17 appearances for the Citizens before switching clubs in January when he joined Bayern Munich on loan after a fallout with Pep Guardiola.

With Bayern and Manchester City emerging league champions in England and Germany, Cancelo, who also made 15 appearances for the Bavarians, has ended the 2022/23 campaign with a Bundesliga and English Premier League winners medal.

Despite being second going into matchday 34, Bayern Munich won 2-1 at FC Koln to win an 11th consecutive Bundesliga title thanks to Borussia Dortmund’s 2-2 draw at FSV Mainz.

Canecelo’s future remains in doubt as it is unclear if Bayern will exercise the right to buy him after his loan spell or if he will return to Manchester City at the end of the season.

Guardiola keen to offload Cancelo

Manchester City are keen to sell Joao Cancelo in the summer as manager Pep Guardiola does not want him in his squad after both parties fell out earlier this season, Football 365 reports.

Cancelo was shipped to Germany afterwards, although the Portugal defender has also failed to endear himself to the Bavarian fans and it is unclear if the club will make his loan deal permanent.

Barcelona and Arsenal are, however, interested in signing Cancelo this summer and have made their intentions known to Manchester City before the transfer window’s opening.

Cancelo opens up on Man City exit

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Portugal international Joao Cancelo has cleared the air about the reason behind his sensational switch to Bayern Munich in the just-ended January transfer window.

The defender completed his loan move from Manchester City to the Bundesliga giants on transfer deadline day, with that deal including an option to purchase permanently.

Cancelo is believed to have reacted angrily after learning he would not be in the starting line-up for Man City's FA Cup tie with Arsenal, and this reportedly birthed his decision to leave the Premier League champions.
