  • Borussia Dortmund were left heartbroken after watching the Bundesliga slip through their hands
  • The Yellow and Blacks played out a 2-2 draw with Mainz on the final day to lose out the Bundesliga title to Bayern Munich
  • It was the first time Dortmund have failed to win at Signal Iduna Park since the start of the year

Football fans were left in a state of shock and disbelief as Borussia Dortmund collapsed on the final day of the Bundesliga title race.

With two points ahead of closest rivals Bayern Munich and a single game away from their first Bundesliga title in 11 years, Dortmund were in pole position to end their trophy drought, but the Yellow and Blacks were left writhing in pain after 90 minutes.

Two first-half goals from Hanche-Olsen and Karim Onisiwo set the tone for Mainz to spoil Dortmund's party. Despite a resurgence in the second half which resulted in two late goals in the last 20 minutes, Edin Terzic's men failed to complete the comeback as Mainz held on for a 2-2 draw.

The result was compounded by Bayern's dramatic victory over FC Koln, which meant Dortmund surrendered their lead at the top of the table to the Bavarians on the final day of action.

The picturesque end to the 2022-23 season in the German top flight left fans devastated for Dortmund, and they took to social media to express their pain.

Fans react to Dortmund's collapse

@_JaySavvy expressed his disappointment with Dortmund:

"Mainz haven't won in their last four games. This might actually be the biggest bottle job ever by a team. Herh Dortmund, how d you lose a title in this fashion."

@iLatif_, on the other hand, took aim at the players:

"This is not possible useless players here."

@Thze_Boi added:

"Uselessness and Dortmund!!! Herh Dortmund. Jesus, I can feel for Dortmund fans Useless club from top to down... Bayern wins this league, they must ban all the players!"

@kobsmann chose to sympathize with Marco Reus, who missed out on his first Bundesliga title:

"Yellow n black people, not today. Herh Dortmund Am sorry Marco Reus."

@ScSeyy likened Dortmund's title collapse to that of Arsenal's failure to win the Premier League despite being at the top of the table for 248 days:

"I CANT BELIEVE THIS… Arsenal is better."

Bayern wins Bundesliga

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Bayern Munich have won their 11th straight Bundesliga title, a 90th-minute goal from Jamal Musiala sealing a late 2-1 win at Cologne after Borussia Dortmund were held 2-2 at home to Mainz.

With Bayern needing a win to overtake Dortmund, the England-raised Germany forward hammered home with the clock winding down, ensuring the Bavarians keep their grip on the title for another season.

Dortmund knew a win would guarantee a title but were 2-0 down after just 25 minutes, with striker Sebastien Haller also having missed a penalty.
