  • Romelu Lukaku started for the first time in a while for Inter Milan against Sassuolo
  • It was the Belgian’s 30th birthday and he celebrated it with two goals
  • His comment after the game appears to suggest his future is in Italy with a return to Chelsea on the cards

Romelu Lukaku appeared to have committed his future to Inter Milan despite the growing possibility of returning to Chelsea at the end of the season.

The Belgian joined Chelsea for the second time in 2021 for a club-record fee of £97.5m, but he fell out with former boss Thomas Tuchel after an unsanctioned interview which angered the manager.

He returned to Inter on loan at the beginning of this season, but his time in Italy has been affected by fitness which has seen him become an option from the bench behind Lautaro Martinez and Edin Dzeko.

He started the game against Sassuolo alongside Joaquin Correa to allow rest for the two main strikers ahead of the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final against AC Milan. Inter won the first leg 2-0, as reported by Marca.

Lukaku: ‘Inter the most important thing’

The 4-2 win over Sassuolo helped Nerazzurri to third on the table, level on points with Juventus, who have played a game more.

Speaking to Sky Italia after the game, as quoted by Football Italia. He expressed satisfaction at winning a challenging game that boosted their top-four chances.

“I am happy we won the game. It was important for us because every time we play Sassuolo at home, they cause us huge problems,” he said.

He understood his role in the team and would be happy to help the team when called upon.

“Of course, every player wants to start, but the coach has to make his choices for the team. As I have always said, the most important thing is Inter and I give my all for the team,” he added.

Chelsea reach agreement with Pochettino

Sports Brief reported that Chelsea reached an agreement with Pochettino for the former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss to take over next season.

Since Lukaku left in the summer, the club had four managers and would be hanging the fifth, which could make him have a change of heart and restart his Chelsea career, with Poch reportedly an admirer.
