  • Javier Mascherano wants to see Lionel Messi back at Barcelona next season
  • The Catalans are among the many clubs interested in signing the Argentine
  • Messi will be a free agent next month when his Paris Saint-Germain deal ends

Javier Mascherano has frowned at how Lionel Messi has been treated in his time with Ligue 1 champions, Paris Saint-Germain, and wants him to leave this summer.

Messi penned a two-year deal with the Parisians in 2021, but the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has endured a torrid pair of seasons, with some PSG fans now protesting for him to leave.

According to PSG Talk, Mascherano - who played alongside Messi at Barcelona - has now called for his former teammate to return to Camp Nou and retire there, where he should retire.

“I would like Messi to come back and finish there [at Barcelona]. I don’t know if the conditions are right either, but personally, I would really like him to be able to close his chapter in Barcelona by returning next season.”

La Blaugrana have made public their desire to re-sign their former star as a free agent this summer, although their financial problems remain a hurdle.

In order to bring the Argentine back on board, they will have to offload some of their current players.

Lionel Messi returns for PSG

Meanwhile, PSG manager, Christophe Galtier has confirmed Messi will play for PSG against Ajaccio on Saturday after the Argentine’s two-week ban was reduced, Goal reports.

The World Cup winner was initially given a period of suspension for an unsolicited trip to Saudi Arabia, which would have forced him to miss Saturday's Ligue 1 match.

However, the 35-year-old has since issued an apology to his PSG teammates and the club board, and has been allowed back into the first-team squad a week early.

Guardiola makes plea to Messi

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Pep Guardiola has advised Messi on what decision to make, ahead of his rumoured exit from PSG when his contract expires in the summer.

The veteran joined the Parisians in 2021 after 21 successful years in Barcelona, with his exit the result of the club's inability to register his new contract due to financial constraints.

Guardiola's message to Messi suggests Camp Nou would be the better option, despite Al-Hilal offering him a mega-million deal million per season to join the Saudi Pro League.
