  • Real Madrid's comment on Karim Benzema's Champions League record hasn't gone down well with Ronaldo faithful
  • Cristiano Ronaldo has always been referred to as 'Mr. Champions League' due to his performances on the big stage
  • Benzema took the European competition mantle from the five-time Ballon d'Or winner when he left for Juventus

A section of staunch Cristiano Ronaldo fans have criticised Real Madrid for calling Karim Benzema by a nickname that is preserved for the current Al-Nassr striker.

Real Madrid beat Liverpool 6-2 on aggregate to qualify for the quarter-finals and maintain their push for a record 15th Champions League title.

Carrying a healthy 5-2 lead from the first leg, Los Blancos scored one at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, with Benzema delivering from close range in the second half.

Afterward, Real Madrid's social media admin took to Twitter and wrote:

"Mr. Champions League."

The comment did not go down well with Ronaldo fans. Arguably one of the best players in football history, the Portuguese star made the Champions League his playing ground, especially during his nine-year stay in Madrid.

Ronaldo's Champions League record

He won four titles in Spain to add to the one he won while at Manchester United. He came up with crucial goals as Real Madrid won three consecutive titles under Zinedine Zidane.

Away from the Spanish giants, his best moment came in a Juventus shirt when he scored a hat-trick in the second leg to overturn a 2-0 deficit against Atletico Madrid.

He is the competition's all-time top scorer. Therefore, to call Benzema 'Mr. Champions League' might be too far-fetched despite the Frenchman's star-making moments.

He particularly starred last season as he was the centre of the huge Madrid comebacks on their way to winning a 14th crown. Benzema was rewarded with the Ballon d'Or for his troubles.

Ronaldo fans flooded the comment section to remind the admin that the Al-Nassr skipper is still the undisputable go-to person for Champions League nights.

It does not matter that he is currently playing in the Middle East.

Benzema extends Madrid contract

At the same time, Sports Brief also reported that Benzema will remain with Real Madrid for at least another season.

The French attacker was in the final few months of his contract with Los Blancos and was free to negotiate with other clubs.

However, Madrid reportedly have a verbal agreement with Benzema over a renewal that will see him stay another term.
