London Marathon: Joyciline Jepkosgei Wins Women's Race as Brigid Kosgei Fails to Defend Crown

Kenya's Joyciline Jepkosgei has won the 2021 edition of the London Marathon.

The women's elite race featured serial winners including Brigid Kosgei and Valary Jemeli.

However, it was Jepkosgei who emerged victor, with the Kenyan posting an impressive 2:17:43, with Ethiopia's Degitu Azimeraw settling for silver.

Ashete Bekere of Ethiopia completed the top three podium, with Brigid Kosgei who was the defending champion finishing under 2:18.

Brigid was aiming for a third consecutive victory in the London Marathon but faced some tough competition to finish fourth.

The time clocked by Jepkosgei saw her ink her name in history books as she became the seventh-fastest female marathoner in history.

Kipchumba settles for silver

In the men's elite race, Vincent Kipchumba had to settle for silver during the 2021 London Marathon after finishing second behind Sisay Lemma of Ethiopia.

Lemma won the race in 2:04:03, with his fellow countryman Mosinet Geremew finishing third during the Sunday, October 3, race.

The race featured four of the seven men who have run 2:03 or faster in the marathon.

Birhanu Legese was a strong favourite to win goal, all thanks to his personal vest of 2:02:48.

Kipchoge misses 2021 London Marathon

Earlier, TUKO.co.ke reported Eliud Kipchoge, a record four-time winner of the London Marathon was set to play no role in this year's edition of the competition.

Kipchoge's name was missing from a list of athletes set to grace the 2021 London Marathon scheduled for Sunday, October 3.

Shura Kitata, who stunned many to win the 2020 edition made the list for those participating in the men's category.
