  • Mason Mount is facing uncertain times at Chelsea with only one year remaining on his current deal
  • He has come under heavy criticism this season due to a major slump in his performances
  • However, losing a player of Mount's profile would be a total calamity for Chelsea

Mason Mount's long-term future at Chelsea is currently hanging by a thread, with the attacking midfielder yet to agree to new terms with the club.

Mount only has one year left on his current deal and Chelsea would rather sell him this summer than lose an academy graduate for free next year. Reports broke out on Wednesday evening that he had agreed personal terms with Manchester United.

Contract negotiations are believed to have stalled after Todd Boehly stepped down from his directorship role after the appointment of Paul Winstanley as the club's new director.

Football London reports that Mount rejected Chelsea's proposition of a longer contract. Mount is said to want a shorter contract and a higher pay to signify his importance at the club. But he is now set to leave with Manchester United as his preferred destination.

A section of Chelsea fans on social media have subjected him to vitriol, especially after his performances took a major dip this season amid Chelsea's overall struggles.

But just how important is Mount? With other top-six clubs lurking, here is why Chelsea need to pull out all stops and tie him to a new deal.

1. Same trajectory as Lampard/Gerrard

There is no doubt that Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are the best midfielders that have ever set foot in the Premier League. As the Telegraph reports, Mount's current statistics before his 25th birthday show a similar trajectory to Lampard's and Gerrard's.

Admittedly, Lampard and Gerrard were in a class of their own, but so far, so good; Mount isn't badly off. Chelsea won't want to lose a player with so much potential. No one would want a repeat of the Kevin De Bruyne situation.

At 24, he can only get better.

2. Chelsea academy graduate

Chelsea's recent forays in the transfer market have sent shivers in their academy and youth systems that they will not be accorded first-team opportunities.

It would even be more catastrophic if they'd let a Cobham graduate leave. Mount embodies the complete Chelsea DNA of nurturing their own player, and it would be reassuring if the club entrusted him in their future plans.

3. Utility player

Mount's favourite position remains an attacking role, preferably to the left side of midfield, where he famously assisted Kai Havertz in the 2021 Champions League final.

But apart from that, he can play on either wing, just behind the striker or anchor the midfield with a defensive midfielder. A multi-faceted player is always important to a dynamic coach like Mauricio Pochettino.

4. Leader

At such a young age, Mount has never been shy to confront opponents and match officials and psyche up his teammates. He was voted the club's player of the year for two consecutive years after sublime performances.

With the old crop of Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva edging out, the Blues will need someone new to herald them in a new direction. Mount and his Cobham compatriot, Reece James, immediately come to mind.

Chelsea fans taunt Mount

Sports Brief had earlier reported that the English midfielder has been targeted by fans for his dip in form this season.

In a video uploaded on Tiktok by journalist Amelia Dimoldenberg, Mount was spotted dancing, a video which has made some Chelsea fans taunt him after it made its way to Twitter.

ThatGuyLeee uploaded the video on Twitter and captioned it as the midfielder's highlights of the season.
