  • Neymar is expected to be on the sidelines for 3-4 months

Paris Saint-Germain have announced that Neymar Junior will undergo ligament repair surgery which will see him miss the rest of the season.

The 31-year-old was taken off the field with an ankle injury during PSG's clash against rivals Lille in Ligue 1 last month.

The Brazil magician was on target in the hard-fought 4-3 victory but he landed clumsily following a 51st minute tackle, undergoing extensive treatment before being stretchered off.

It was reported initially the playmaker had suffered a sprained ankle, but further tests suggest he has weakened his ligaments, which - if not treated - might end his career.

PSG have now made the decision for Neymar to undergo surgery, as confirmed in an official statement:

“Neymar Jr has had several episodes of right ankle instability in recent years. Following his last sprain contracted on February 20, the medical staff of Paris Saint-Germain recommended a ligament repair operation, in order to avoid a major risk of recurrence. All of the experts consulted confirmed this need. This surgery will be performed in the coming days at ASPETAR Hospital in Doha.”

Neymar misses Bayern clash

The latest injury development for Neymar indicates he will not be part of PSG's squad to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League round of 16 second-leg tie at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

Since joining PSG, the former Barcelona winger has been ruled out of at least one of the French club's knockout encounters against Real Madrid in 2018, Manchester United in 2019, Barcelona in 2021, and Real Madrid in 2022.

However, during the 2020/21 season, Neymar was able to feature in the home and away games for PSG against German giants, Borussia Dortmund.

Neymar spent two years sidelined

Neymar joined PSG from Barcelona in a move worth €222 million in the summer of 2017.

His latest injury, which has sidelined him for four months, means he has been out of action for PSG for 731 days, equivalent to two full years, as per Marca.

Since signing for the Parisian giants for the 2017/18 season, the Brazil genius has missed one out of every two seasons he has featured for PSG.

Neymar failed to play 104 matches in a PSG shirt in all competitions, making only 173 appearances.

This means he has been injured in approximately 37.5 percent of the games in which he has been available for the Parisian club.

Man City given Neymar offer

Meanwhile, English Premier League champions, Manchester City are one of the teams reportedly offered the transfer of PSG superstar, Neymar, Caught Offside reports.

The Brazil international’s future at the French capital seems to be in some doubt at the moment with the Ligue 1 champions placing the star on the club’s transfer list.

Manchester City and Liverpool supposedly have approached Neymar over the possibility of bringing the 30-year-old over to the Premier League next summer.

Neymar keen on PSG extension

Sports Brief also reported on Neymar reportedly having unfinished business at PSG and not being willing to leave even if close ally, Lionel Messi departs.

The Argentine genius has been touted to be on his way out despite only linking up with his former Barcelona teammate at the Ligue 1 champions in 2021.

However, Neymar wants to win over his critics and is eager to help deliver long-awaited European glory to PSG by winning the UEFA Champions League.
