Madagascar Players Given Heroic Welcome After Winning First Ever Medal at Football Competition

The home-based national football team of Madagascar was met by thousands of fans, following their return home after finishing third at the CHAN 2022 tournament in Algeria.

The Bareas defeated Niger 1-0 in the third and fourth place play-off to win bronze at the African Nations Championship, their first-ever medal at a football tournament.

Madagascar was one of the most exciting teams at the competition in Algeria, finishing their group with a hundred percent record after beating Ghana and Sudan.

Madagascar thrashed Mozambique in the quarter-final before they were stopped by eventual champions, Senegal in the semi-finals.

In photos shared on social media, the team received a rapturous welcome as the Malagasy people sang and chanted names of their players.

Meanwhile, the Malagasy Football Federation is hoping to build on success at the CHAN tournament, by qualifying to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Madagascar have been at AFCON once after making it to Egypt 2019, where they surprisingly reached the quarter-finals before losing 3-0 to Tunisia.

Madagascar stuns Ghana

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Ghana's home-based national team, the Black Galaxies being shocked by Madagascar in their opening Group C game at CHAN 2022.

The west African nation was making a return to the tournament after missing the last three editions.

However, their comeback was met with a surprise defeat, after a 2-1 loss in Constantine in January.

Senegal win CHAN 2022

The Teranga Lions are champions of Africa again, after the home-based team of Senegal shocked host Algeria to win the 2022 CHAN tournament.

Goalkeeper, Pape Mamadou Sy became the hero of the night after saving a penalty in the shootout, as the west African nation claimed victory.

Senegal were champions of Africa twelve months ago in Cameroon, while their beach soccer team also won the continental championship.
