Barcelona defender, Jules Kounde has dubbed his teammate Pedri Gonzalez 'Mr Banana', as the midfielder played his 100th official game for the Catalonians.

Pedri was the saviour as La Blaugrana recorded a tense 1-0 win over Catalan rivals, Girona on Saturday evening.

The youngster came on as a substitute for injured Ousmane Dembele, to notch the only goal from close range on his 100th appearance for the Spanish giants.

After the match, Pedri was gifted with a commemorative jersey in the dressing room and took a picture with his teammates, per La Liga TV.

Kounde, who was not in the locker room for the group photo, later took to his Instagram stories to congratulate the midfielder.

He wrote: "Congratulations, mister banana. Let's see if you wait for me before taking the picture next time."

Why Pedri got this nickname

Pedri was born in Tenerife in the Canary Islands on November 25, 2002. The Canary Islands is a region in Spain known for producing and exporting bananas in large quantities, Tribuna noted.

They trans-ship bananas not only to mainland Spain, but to other parts of the world.

Xavi unhappy with Barcelona's performance

Meanwhile, Barcelona continues to lead the way in La Liga, but coach Xavi is not happy with how his team is playing.

La Blaugrana's manager was reacting to the side's recent 1-0 victory over Getafe.

As noted by ESPN, Pedri grabbed the only goal of the game, as Barca kept a clean sheet and maintained their lead over Real Madrid at the top of the standings.

As players turned up to training, following their Supercopa de España triumph over El Clasico rivals Real Madrid, it was their modes of transport that caught the eye.
