Luis Suarez has opened up on how Lionel Messi played an instrumental role in his move to Brazilian club Gremio.

The veteran forward opted to join the Porto Alegre-based giants after a hugely successful brief stint with boyhood club Nacional.

Suarez, who scored over 300 goals across Ajax, Liverpool and Barcelona before returning to South America, notched a stunning first-half hattrick on his Gremio bow, per GOAL.

His dream start to life in Brazil ended in a comprehensive 4-1 victory for his new side, resulting in their first trophy of the season in the Recopa Gaucha ahead of the start of the upcoming Campeonato Gaucho - Brazilian top flight.

Reflecting on how he made the decision to join Gremio, the 35-year-old revealed:

"Before signing for Gremio, Leo [Messi] told me 'Make the best decision, and if you have to choose, Brazilian football is very competitive and everyone speaks well of it... Go and enjoy, keep living football the way you like to live it," Suarez said as quoted by Barca Universal.

Suarez seals Gremio move

Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez’s next destination has been confirmed as he is set to join Brazilian club Gremio in the coming days.

Suarez, 35, has reportedly had a verbal agreement to join the club, with his current contract with Uruguay side Nacional running out.

According to reports from Mirror, Suarez was urged by a ‘friend’ believed to be Lionel Messi, to make the switch.

Suarez nets debut hattrick

Sports Brief earlier reported that Barcelona icon Luis Suarez had a dream debut for his new Brazilian club Gremio on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old netted a first-half hattrick to help the Porto Alegre-based club to win the Recopa Gaucha Super Cup.

The Uruguay international bagged three goals inside 37 minutes as they recorded a resounding 4-1 over Sao Luiz in the curtain-raiser for the new season.
