  • Paris Saint-Germain went down 1-0 away to Rennes in the Ligue 1 on Sunday evening
  • The Parisians failed to glitter, stretching a winless run at Roazhan Park to four games
  • One of the game's key moments was a rare miss by the World Cup star Kylian Mbappe

Paris Saint-Germain stumbled to an unexpected defeat against Rennes, on Kylian Mbappe's return from a post-World Cup holiday.

Mbappe was afforded a brief break after returning to club football, 72 hours after losing in the World Cup final to Lionel Messi's Argentina.

He was expected to boost PSG's attack on his return, but a second-half cameo did not yield the expected dividends, as Hamari Traore's strike downed Christophe Galtier's charges, per BBC.

The result could have read differently however, if Mbappe had his scoring boots on.

The 24-year-old uncharacteristically missed a sitter after he was put through by Lionel Messi. Mbappe's inability to convert from a one-versus-one situation summarised a poor outing for PSG, who suffered their second successive away loss since the start of 2023.

The Mbappe-Messi combo will hope to be more clinical as they face a Saudi All-Star XI on Thursday, January 19, which could include veteran Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi, Mbappe share 'awkward' reunion

The first meeting between Messi and Mbappe, since the final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, has been described as awkward.

Messi led Argentina to defeat France in the final, with both PSG players playing a crucial role for their teams, scoring a brace and a hat-trick respectively in the final.

There was not too much excitement when the reigning World Cup champion met up with his French teammate, during PSG’s training ahead of their Ligue 1 clash against Rennes.

Is Mbappe's brother unhappy with Messi?

Sports Brief earlier reported that Messi returned to PSG for training, but not everyone seems pleased to have him back.

Argentina beat former champions France in the final in Qatar. It was a lovely moment for the former Barcelona captain, who finally completed his trophy cabinet after many years.

According to a photo spotted on Twitter however, Mbappe's younger brother, Ethan did not seem pleased to see the veteran return to the Ligue 1 champions.
